Final Thoughts
Kino: 9/10/09
1. I did not expect the trip to be as fun as it was. I really thought we would work really hard, and stay in really hard to live places. Our room was nicer than I expected.
2. I did not expect to make many friends - but I did. When we travel, we normally never get to know people's names, or even go in their houses. we don't generally see or talk to anybody while we are on other trips. In Mexico, we would talk to other kids there, and find out their names and what they liked and made friends with them. Some of them are a lot like me. They can also be shy.
3. Mexicans do not to put any veggies or greens in their tacos. They always served soft shell tortillas, and mostly used it as bread. not as tacos. They never gave us lettuce or tomatoes or grated cheese. They did make a lot of quesadillas, and mostly used soft tortillas as bread.
4. I realized Mexicans are just regular people, not different from us. There are some who live in nice houses, and some in an orphanage and are poor. They even share their clothes ( after they wash it well). I am glad we got them underwear. we just really need to get to know them better to see that. I think I will be nicer to Mexicans who work in restaurants here. They probably have kids like Izak or Hugo.
5. I liked the service in the Spanish church because the songs were really nice. The thought was the same, but it sounded different in Spanish. When I close my eyes when the Pastor prayed, I did not understand everything he said except Dios, but i could kind of tell that he was either praising or asking because of the tone of his voice.
Tristan:
1. I expected that we would do more hammering and building. I never expected we would get to do any of the fun stuff like the Safari. I really enjoyed it because I did not expect it. When we go on vacation, we expect to do a lot of fun stuff, but in the mission trip, the fun stuff was a big surprise and I remember it more.
2. Of all the people I met, Dante from the orphanage was the cutest. He always looked happy and he was very funny. I just liked taking care of him. Of the older ones, I liked Jeff, the son of Mr. Scott (the missionary). He was about 11 and he was funny and knew a lot about Mexico.
3. I loved the Mexican food. They always had the soft tortillas, and most of the time was corn not flour. They always had two types of meat - one that you could eat by itself, and one that could go in the tortillas. I learned a new trick, where you pick up a chicken piece with a tortilla so your hands don't get greasy. Every meal, they gave you tortillas in a small basket, covered with cloth to keep it warm. I also liked the Jamaica tea- it was red and sweet and made of flower petals that are dried. My mom says it was hibiscus.
4. Like people who visit New York, people who see Times square think that all of New York is like that. Like the way we think of Mexico when we go to Acapulco or a resort. But this time, it was a lot different. We actually talked to the people there and saw what Mexico was really like.
5. Serving people is both hard and easy to do because whenever you are in a different country you are so used to playing, so that it sort of comes to you naturally - that playing spirit. So you just need to try once, and you kind of get in the habit and from there on it is easier.
