Chorizo and eggs

today for break fest we ate a traditional breakfast, chorizo and eggs.
Waiting for dinner at Cumbres
at dinner we ate tacos. we also ate nopales, which is a kind of prickly pear cactus.
it was really good.
here is a recipe for nopales salsa\
Nopales Salsa
* 1 lb. cleaned cactus pads
* 1/2 lb. tomatillos
* 1 small white onion
* 2 garlic cloves
* 2 poblano peppers
* 1/2 tsp. of salt
* 2 tsp.of fresh lime juice
* 1/2 tsp.of cumin
* 2 Tbs. cilantro
Select small or medium sized, firm pads. Make sure the pads you select are not wrinkled, soggy or too soft. These pads (or paddles) are modified branches, which range in color from pale to dark green. They also contain sharp, thorny needles, which are modified leaves.
These, thorny needles must be removed with a knife or vegetable peeler before cooking. Remove any nodules, the thick stem, and trim the edges off of the pads as well. Make sure you wear rubber or leather gloves when handling Nopales to avoid injury from the thorny needles.
Wash thoroughly and follow the recipe instructions below. Nopales can be tightly wrapped and stored in a refrigerator for one to two weeks. Once you have removed the needles, nodules and thoroughly washed the pads, grill for about 7 minutes on each side. Slice the grilled pads into strips. Place tomatillos, cubed onions and garlic in a baking dish, then cook in a 450-degree oven for 20-25 minutes. Roast poblanos on grill or under the broiler, then peel them and remove the seeds. Place all ingredients in a blender and mix until well chopped. A little water may be needed to moisten the salsa. Serve chilled with chips or use to season tacos, burritos or other Mexican dishes.

Big lunch ! Yum !

then we ate lunch. we had tacos, I had three of them. I noticed that they never gave us a vegetable after a while we went back to casa hogar and did more crafts.
The Older People work hard
They finished painting four rooms!
Meanwhile.. Dad sat with three fans in front of him, making designs for the sign for the churches.. and a logo he said. We thought it was not fair..

Casa hogar
Journal Day 2 8/23/09
When the kids left for school - we had lunch and went on to the next children 's program. This time, we went to the orphanage called Casa Hogar. There were 39 kids. one of them was named Dante. we did crafts there too. we were playing with the kids,when we found a trampoline, and played on it for a while.

Dad taught the young boys how to draw "el Tigre" . It was hard to instruct without a lot of Spanish !

we had brought lots of crafts on the trip. so we made some with the kids at Bethel.
we made pipe cleaner animals, dad taught a drawing class. and we made name tags for the kids.

the next day, We met the kids at Bethel . Because there are not enough classrooms or teachers, half of the kids go to school in the morning , and the other half from 1-5. We ran a kids program for those who stayed home in the morning.

We go to Cumbres del Rey and meet the pastor. He preached in Spanish, and we sang

We finally arrive in Monterrey at 9:00 pm. It is an hour ahead New York time.
we got our room key and went upstairs and found out that Johnny, our leader was in the room next to us.I was hungry so we got some tacos to eat before sleeping

we had lot's of fun on the plane. taj taught how to make step by step pipe cleaner men to adam. for a while we took turns on my dad's Iphone.

Kino: when we reached the airport I felt very excited, I coudn't wait to go to mexico!
when we got inside the building, I saw that the line to check in our bags was pretty long. we waited for several minutes, then we saw that my friends Adam and
Eli were checking in their bags too. we went to them and started to talk together. soon it was our turn to check in our bags. when we were finished we went through the security check and went to find Adam and Eli. after about an hour, we went on the plane.
We are Off!
Flight leaves at 2:00 pm. Mom got us our own rolly-polly bags that we packed on our own.
Collecting and Packing our Craft Maleta
They said we would be helping do crafts at Casa Hogar. We went to the dollar store to get TONS of pipe cleaners to make pipe cleaner guys... tons of play dough .. markers .. we even got glue sticks to make name plates.
We spent 60 dollars on 1 dollar craft things. That was the most we spent on craft stuff in a dollar store, Mom can't say No when we ask for craft stuff. She does not like us to get plastic toys there.

Making Corn Tortillas
We have been studying and tasting Mexican food ( as in a lesson!) These are our attempts to make our oen corn tortillas. We bought Masa Harina at the Latino section in the supermarket.
Making "pequenas bolas".. Of course, as always.. Mom made us read the Spanish instructions. We kind of understood what to do.
They suggested a tortilla press, but we thought we could handle it without.
Getting a little frustrated.. Decided to step on it !
Success!! We cooked it, but it was a little hard. No wonder people BUY corn tortillas. Well, at least we know all you need is water and the flour. That is it!
We end up making pretend salad. We even "plated" it.. Mom said we could have the rest of the masa harina.
