July 2009 - Deciding to Go

From Our Parents :

Since becoming parents, we have tried to instill in our two boys the values of empathy and understanding, not just for each other, but for their neighbors. Living in New York, the kids see every day how much despair and need there is in our city. At the same time, they realize they have lived lives without that shadow of want. Now 8 and 10, they are old enough to wonder why this is, why the basic reality of their lives contrasts so sharply with a portion of what they see around them. We can answer them pretending that it’s because we’ve worked hard, or that we made the right choices, or that we are just lucky. But the truth is we don’t know, and we can only hope to transform this mystery into a calling.

This year, we came across a chance to take on this calling in a new way. Several families from Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, are traveling as a group to minister to the needs of the children of Monterrey. Monterrey is the third largest city in Mexico, and like most big cities, is a cultural and technological center, but also a place where poverty and lack of opportunity are very common. For the week that we are there, we look to work along side the church in running children's educational and sports programs, and serving children at an orphanage.
